This was an eventful year. The death occurred through a motor accident, on 4 April, of the pioneer neurosurgeon, Cecil A Calvert. The Hospital was awaiting the opening of wards 25 and 26 for metabolic and skin diseases and of wards 23 and 24 for gynaecology (thus vacating 17-18, which would become a fracture unit). Continuity of junior staffing was simplified by changing the date of appointment of senior house officers from 1 October to 1 August, although housemen now lost the opportunity of a well-earned rest, a lucrative GP locumtenancy, or a short trip as a ship's doctor.
